Three Argentine chefs land on list of world’s 100 best

Mauro Colagreco, Agustín Balbi, and Gonzalo Aramburu each received recognition this year from The Best Chef

The international recognition of Argentina’s culinary culture just keeps growing.

On Friday, Michelin, the French tire company and owner of the restaurant industry’s premier guidebook, will unveil its first starred restaurants in Buenos Aires and Mendoza. And on Monday, three Argentine chefs cracked The Best Chef’s annual list of the 100 best chefs in the world: Mauro Colagreco, Agustín Balbi, and Gonzalo Aramburu.

Colagreco, the owner of Mirazur in Menton, France, was ranked 31; Balbi, who runs Ando in Hong Kong, ranked 46; while Aramburu, who heads a restaurant of the same name in Recoleta, ranked 89. The top-ranked chef was Spain’s Dabiz Muñoz, who owns the three-star eatery DiverXO in Madrid.

In addition to Mirazur, Colagreco has received Michelin stars for Côte in Bangkok, Thailand, and the K in Saint Moritz, Switzerland. He also owns the Côte Bleue restaurant, Ceto.

Balbi left Argentina when he was 20 years old and worked in the United States and Japan before finally settling in Hong Kong. Ando, which fuses Spanish and Japanese cuisines, earned a Michelin star six months after it opened in 2020.

Aramburu opened his establishment in 2007 after training with such distinguished chefs as Daniel Boulud, Charlie Trotter, and Martin Berasategui. The eatery Aramburu, which offers an 18-course tasting menu, was voted one of Latin America’s 50 best restaurants in 2022.

The Best Chef has released its list of the top 100 chefs across the globe since 2017, when it held its first award ceremony in Warsaw, Poland. As many as 180 food journalists, critics, bloggers, photographers, and other industry professionals, each with a “broad knowledge of fine dining,” vote on the list each year.
