A 56-year-old Romanian woman died on Thursday after reaching the summit of mount Aconcagua, in Mendoza, Argentina. She was later identified by the provincial police as Mihaela Gabi Ianosi.

According to the police report, Ianosi fainted around 3 p.m. near the summit, and was found with a weak pulse. A medic who was nearby administered adrenaline and practiced CPR for eight minutes, but was unable to revive her.

Her case is now being investigated by the Mendoza judiciary. An autopsy will be conducted to understand what caused her death.

According to her social media, Ianosi worked for an adventure tourism company in Romania. She described herself as “very happy” in her Facebook bio. Her last Facebook posts, from mid-January, showed her enjoying the architecture of Mendoza and excitedly embarking on the trip to Aconcagua base camp.

Ianosi is the third climber to have died on Aconcagua this season. On December 31, 30-year-old American Raul Alexander Tartera lost his life at an altitude of around 6,700 meters, after reaching the summit.

Four days later, on January 3, Minaev Andrei, 30, from Russia, was found dead at the Plaza de Mulas base camp, some 4,200 meters above sea level.

With a summit 6,960 meters above sea level, Mount Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Americas and the western and southern hemispheres. It’s located 112 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital of Mendoza.

According to the Mendoza government, around 5,500 tourists attempt the climb every year. The trip typically takes around two weeks, and climbers need to be in excellent physical condition.
