News channel attacked during Cristina Kirchner conviction protests

TV station TN accused ‘Kirchnerist supporters’ of forcing an entrance and breaking doors and equipment. A man was arrested

A group of people forcibly entered the building of TV news station TN on Tuesday night. According to TN and news outlet Clarín, who belong to the same media group, “over a hundred Kirchnerist activists” stomped onto the premises, breaking glass doors, electronic equipment, and cars in the parking lot.

One man was arrested early Wednesday for his role in the incidents, a Buenos Aires City Police source confirmed to the Herald.

The attack happened a few hours after the Supreme Court confirmed former President Cristina Kirchner’s conviction in the corruption case known as Vialidad. Thousands of Kirchner’s supporters gathered around her apartment in the Constitución neighborhood in Buenos Aires, located just a few blocks away from the TV studios from which channels TN and eltrece broadcast.

Footage from the compound’s security cameras shows a large group of people forcing the gate open and throwing rocks at the parked cars in the lot. Images also show hooded men breaking the glass door and entering the building, throwing pieces of debris, kicking trashcans, and breaking TVs.

According to a TN article, “the protesters threw bicycles and rocks at the building’s windows.” Clarín added that deputy Margarita Stolbizer’s and TN anchor Marcelo Bonelli’s cars were among those vandalized, as well as stations’ workers’ vehicles.

The man arrested was detained for “participating in the incidents and thrashing” the building to “protest the conviction” of Kirchner, according to a statement by city police.

The 34-year-old suspect was identified due to physical characteristics and his clothing.

The Argentine Journalistic Entities’ Association (ADEPA, by its Spanish initials) and the Buenos Aires Press Union (SIPREBA) condemned the attack, calling for journalists to be protected. “Workers are not the same as the outlet’s editorial line. We demand to be able to do our jobs without suffering from violence,” SIPREBA wrote in a short statement.

On Tuesday, while speaking after the confirmation of her conviction was announced, Kirchner said that “concentrated economic power” was responsible for the ruling. She mentioned a Clarín article published after she suffered a murder attempt in 2023, which was titled “Cristina, between the bullet that didn’t come out and the ruling that will come out.”

“It couldn’t be any clearer,” she said. A protester shouted, “F*ck you, Magnetto,” referencing Clarín Group CEO Héctor Magnetto. Kirchner replied, “Amen.”

The media group Grupo Clarín — which includes outlets such as TN, eltrece, and Clarín — has been in a two-decade-long feud with Kirchner. While Kirchner’s supporters accuse the group of carrying out media operations against her, the outlets have defended themselves by saying that they have only been investigating accusations of corruption.
