Family, friends and celebrities have paid tribute to former One Direction member Liam Payne, who died in a Buenos Aires hotel on Wednesday.
Payne’s family released a statement on Thursday, according to the BBC. “We are heartbroken,” it reads.
“Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
The UK prime minister’s office also issued a statement, saying Keir Starmer’s “sincere condolences are with Liam’s family and friends.”
“One Direction were one of the biggest bands in history and their music had a huge impact on many millions of fans around the world,” they added.
The band formed after meeting on the British TV talent contest X Factor. They shot to international stardom in the 2010s before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
The UK House of Commons Leader Lucy Powell addressed Payne’ also sent condolences to Payne’s family, describing his death as a “tragic end for someone so young.”
Celebrities and artists around the world have also expressed their sympathy and thoughts on the death of Payne, who fell from a third floor window at the CasaSur hotel in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo.
Oasis member Liam Gallagher wrote “Life is precious kids and you only get to do it ONCE go easy,” on his X account, describing Payne’s death as “very sad.”
Singer-songwriter and friend Charlie Puth, who co-wrote Payne’s 2017 song Bedroom Floor, described himself as “in shock.”
“Liam was always so kind to me. He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I can not believe he is gone.” He shared a video of the two artists when they were young with the words “I am so upset right now, may he rest in peace. I am so sorry,” Puth wrote on his Instagram account.
“This all feels so surreal,” One Direction guitarist Dan Richards wrote on social media. “Thanks to everyone reaching out. Still trying to wrap my head around it all. My thoughts go out to Liam’s family at this time.”
Pioneering boy band Backstreet Boys also paid tribute to Payne’s death on social media, writing: “Words can not express the emotions we are collectively feeling right now, and it seems like the rest of the world is in the same boat.”
Fellow X Factor stars Jedward posted their message to Payne’s family.
“Sending strength to Cheryl and his son Bear and all the One Direction family,” they wrote.
The show’s official account, as well as former contestants and hosts, paid tribute to Payne online.
“We are heartbroken by the sad passing of Liam Payne. He was immensely talented and, as part of One Direction, Liam will leave a lasting legacy on the music industry and fans around the world,” read the show’s post.
“I remember him as a 14-year-old turning up to audition on The X Factor, and blowing us away singing Sinatra,” presenter Dermot O’Leary wrote.
Cher Lloyd, who was a contestant alongside Payne wrote: “I’ll cherish the memories made and the laughs we had…Rest in peace Liam.”
