Cordoba Governor Schiaretti announced he will run for president

He claims he wants to end the political divide

Córdoba province’s Peronist Governor Juan Schiaretti announced today in the city of San Francisco that he will run for President in the open, simultaneous and obligatory primaries (PASO) on August 13, representing “a coalition that represents work, production and overcomes the grieta [political divide].”

“I want to announce to the people of Córdoba and to Argentines that I will be a candidate for President in the next PASO in August, and I will do it for a coalition that represents those who work, the productive interior, and that also expresses the overcoming of this damned rift that is hurting Argentina so much,” the Governor announced, referring to the polarization in the country’s political landscape.

He did not say what coalition he would run with. Schiaretti has said in the past that he is not interested in competing within ruling coalition Frente de Todos (FdT) or opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC), but rather in building a new space where other candidates can participate.

Schiaretti has recently held several meetings and built alliances with governors and deputies from his and other provinces, including Santa Fe, Salta, San Luis and Buenos Aires. His allies so far include national deputy for the Province of Buenos Aires Florencio Randazzo, former Salta governor Juan Manuel Urtubey and national deputy and Popular Socialist leader Mónica Fein.

This morning, during statements to the local press, Schiaretti said that the political divide “causes so much damage to us Argentines.”

“What we are looking for is an Argentina that leaves decadence behind and starts solving the serious problems suffered by our people,” he said.

“We need to be a normal country.”
