France may have finished second in last year’s World Cup, but its culture is the number one attraction in Buenos Aires this Saturday.

From 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., the city of Buenos Aires will be holding its ninth annual BA Celebrates France event on Avenida de Mayo, between Bolívar and Chacabuco downtown. 

Visitors can enjoy live music and more than 30 different food stands peddling classic French dishes like onion soup and boeuf bourguignon — a hearty stew of mushrooms, onion, panceta, and beef braised in red wine. For dessert, they can sample all manner of local delicacies, from pains au chocolat to waffles and tartelettes. 

The afternoon’s musical acts include the melancholic-pop artist Agathe Cipres, the folkloric fusion duo París Paraná, and Les Manivelles, which mixes rhythms from different Latin American and French-speaking cultures. Rounding out the concert will be Manu Bertrand, who will play a selection of original songs and classic blues titles. All of the performances are free and open to the public.

“Buenos Aires is full of French traces in its architecture, its literature, and its history,” said Mercedes Bárbara, the city’s general director of collectives. “This Saturday, we will be able to enjoy all of that in the latest BA Celebrates France.”

Diplomatic relations between Argentina and France date back to the early nineteenth century. In fact, it was Napoleon’s overthrow of Ferdinand VII that indirectly led to the Argentine War of Independence. Today, both nations are members of the G-20, which contains many of the world’s largest economies.

BA Celebrates France is sponsored by the French Embassy, the French Gastronomic Association in Argentina, the Chamber of Commerce of Franco-Argentine Industry, and the Undersecretary of Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism.
