At least 20 flights have been canceled and several others delayed at Jorge Newbery (Aeroparque) airport in Buenos Aires due to trade union actions.
Members of a pilots’ union and two baggage handlers’ unions held assemblies between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. The first delays began at around 10 a.m. at Aeroparque.
Eight Aerolíneas Argentinas flights were canceled — including at least one international flight to Asunción, Paraguay — and 15 were delayed and rescheduled for after 12 p.m., after the assemblies finished, according to a spokesperson for airport company Aeropuertos Argentina.
While the pilots’ assembly finished by noon, the baggage handlers were still debating by 1 p.m. Normal service is expected to resume over the afternoon.
A communiqué by Flybondi said that 12 flights have been canceled so far, “directly affecting over 2,200 passengers,” and warned that more flights could be affected due to rescheduling issues.
Ministro Pistarini international airport in Ezeiza is operating normally, because the union assemblies were only held in Aeroparque.
JetSmart did not cancel any flights, but did reschedule four so that they would take off before the assemblies. Passengers were alerted beforehand. They also moved six flights that were supposed to take off from Aeroparque to Ezeiza. Only two flights — one to Santiago (Chile) and another to Asunción (Paraguay) — were delayed by a few minutes, they told the Herald.
Passengers can check the status of all flights on Aeropuertos Argentina’s website or their airline’s website.
Pilots will also carry out assemblies on August 22 at Ezeiza airport, from 9-11:30 p.m; August 27 at Córdoba and Mendoza airports from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; August 28 at the Ezeiza airport, from 9 p.m. until midnight; and August 30, from 6-9 a.m.
