White chocolate alfajor from Patagonia named world champion

Hundreds of alfajores from several countries competed at the World Alfajor Championship in Buenos Aires

A Patagonian alfajor has been awarded the top honor at the fourth edition of the World Alfajor Championship, held this past weekend in Buenos Aires.

Chacra Los Retamos, a brand from El Hoyo, Chubut, won the title of Best Alfajor in the World 2025 with its walnut flour alfajor filled with dulce de leche and coated in white chocolate. The creation was selected by a jury of 20 specialists through a blind-tasting process that applied more than 35 evaluation criteria.

Last year’s winning alfajor was a controversial mix of freeze-dried raspberries, ganache, meringue, and raspberry “volcano” with a dark chocolate coating.

The championship took place from August 15 to 17 at Costa Salguero’s Pavilion 6, organizers reported close to 50,000 visitors over the three days.

Hundreds of alfajores from Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Spain, the United States and Paraguay were submitted for judging. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded in 19 categories, including Traditional, Fruit, Healthy, Exotic and Packaging.

This year placed special focus on regional varieties with the introduction of the Best Mar del Plata–Style Alfajor category. The prize went to La Aldea, recognized for its chocolate alfajor with extra dulce de leche and white chocolate coating.

Beyond the competition, the Championship offered activities for visitors including tastings, product sales, masterclasses, raffles and live music. The event also hosted the Second International Alfajor Forum, featuring technical talks on production, finance, distribution and the application of artificial intelligence to the industry.
