Temperatures are forecast to reach 43°C (109°F) in northern Argentina in a hot spell that is expected to start on Thursday and last at least until Sunday, the country’s National Meteorological Service has warned.

The hot air mass that is currently affecting southern Brazil and Paraguay will extend into Argentina, affecting eight provinces: Chaco, Formosa, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Corrientes, Misiones, eastern Salta and northern Santa Fe. The region includes tourist hotspot, the Iguazú falls.

During this period the high temperatures are expected to be 35-43°C throughout the day, although higher measures may be recorded in some towns. Temperatures will stay high at night, with lows of between 22°C and 28°C.

The heat poses health risks, especially for those with chronic illnesses. The Health Ministry is warning the general public to stay hydrated, wear light clothes, and avoid physical exercise. It also recommends eating fresh produce instead of very sweet or salty foods, and cautions against consuming alcohol.

As always, it’s advisable to stay informed on the alert levels and forecasts through the national weather service’s early warning system
