Manchester City wins UEFA Champions League and Álvarez makes history

Despite not playing, the striker earned a spot in Argentine football history

One goal ended up being all Manchester City needed to win its first UEFA Champions League 1-0 against Internazionale of Milan. The game played in the Olympic Atatürk stadium in Istanbul was a hard fought match where each time tried to impose their style.

The first scoring opportunity was for Manchester City, when Erling Haaland’s strike in the box was saved by Inter goalie André Onana 28 minutes into the match. Even though clear chances were scarce, Inter had a clear scoring opportunity Lautaro Martínez could not deliver. Everything seemed gridlocked until Phil Fodden managed to get all the way to the end of the field and pass the ball back for Rodri to score 23 minutes into the second half.

The game felt undecided until the last play, when a heading from Inter striker Romelu Lukaku was saved between goalkeeper Ederson Moraes and Rodri, sending the ball out of bounds. Inter kept pressing until the end, but eventually came up short.

The match was special for Argentine football fans, given that two of its stars were present in what is arguably one of Europe’s most important sporting events: Lautaro Martínez, from Inter, and Julián Alvarez, from Manchester City, the two center forwards of La Scaloneta at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar that Argentina.

Martínez, known as El Toro (The bull), played the entire game and was closely guarded by Manchester defenders. He had a clear scoring opportunity at the 13 minute mark of the second half, when he chased down a ball in the box to come face-to-face with Moraes, who managed to block his shot. Álvarez started the game as a backup and did not enter.

Despite not playing, Álvarez, known affectionately as La araña (The spider), became part of Argentine football history with this win. He is the only player to ever win the South American Football Championship (Copa América, in Spanish) and the World Cup at the national level, as well as the Copa Libertadores de América and the Champions League at the club level.

With its first UEFA Champions League in only its second trip to the finals (it lost against Chelsea in 2021), Manchester City ended its season winning the three most important tournaments it played: the Premier League, the FA Cup and Champions League, a remarkable feat in world football.
