Macron lends support to Milei with IMF talks ongoing

The French and Argentine presidents reportedly discussed critical metals and other topics in a phone call Tuesday

President Javier Milei held a telephone conversation this Tuesday with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. After the call, Macron described Argentina as a “friend” on social media, offering a token of support at a time when the country is expected to sign a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

“I just spoke with Argentine President @JMilei. We discussed Argentina’s economic situation and the challenges ahead. The Argentine people can always count on France’s support. Much more than a partner in key sectors like critical metals, Argentina is a friend with whom we want to build the economy of tomorrow,” Macron posted on his X account.

The Argentine head of state responded almost immediately in both Spanish and French, writing: “Thank you, President @EmmanuelMacron. We deeply value your support and France’s commitment to the Argentine people.”

“We will continue working together, as true friends, to face the challenges and build shared opportunities in key sectors for the future,” he added.

The relationship between Macron and Milei has grown closer since the French president visited Argentina last November ahead of his trip to Brazil to participate in the G20 summit. The two leaders met at the Casa Rosada and shared a dinner at the presidential residence in Quinta de Olivos.

At the time, Macron hinted at expanding relations between the two countries, “especially in the [areas of] economy, defense, and innovation.”
