Carnival weekend sees record flow of tourism

Many locations across the country were at 100% capacity over the four-day weekend

A record-breaking three million people took advantage of the Carnival long weekend to travel around Argentina, according to the Argentine Tourism Observatory (OAT), with many local destinations across the country reaching 100% capacity.

“This season marked the strong return of international tourism and the consolidation of the sector as one of the driving forces of the economy and job creation,” said Matías Lammens, minister of the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

According to the Observatory, over 20 popular tourist destinations were at full capacity including Quebrada de Humahuaca, Puerto Iguazú and the coast of Buenos Aires. Unsurprisingly, given that it hosts the largest carnival festivities, the province with the highest number of 100% occupancy rates was Entre Ríos (Gualeguaychú, Concordia, Federación, Colón and Concepción del Uruguay).

The figures are the highest since the long weekend, which had been banned by the last military dictatorship, was reestablished in 2011.
