State school teachers on strike, disrupt traffic in BA City centre

UTE teachers union members were on strike today in Buenos Aires City, and carried out a march along Avenida de Mayo in protest against sanctions made against a group of teachers earlier in the week. Three hundred and fifty students are affected by the strike.

“Macri punishes us and persecutes us because public education is not a business,” the secretary general of the union of education workers Eduardo López said. “He seeks to stigmatize public schools. We as teachers work to avoid that the market’s inequalities take place in schools,” he added.

“We march for education freedom and for the respect to teach and learn in democracy. The best fight plan against Macri is to teach in diversity,” he concluded.

The group carried out a protest march from Chacabuco and Avenida de Mayo at 11.30 am this morning, in protest against sanctions placed on two teachers who made fun of City Mayor Mauricio Macri and City Education Minister Esteban Bullrich in a video published online.

Traffic was disrupted in the area during the march.
