    Alfonsín remembered

    On the third anniversary of his death, supporters and former officials met at the Recoleta Cemetery yesterday in honour of former president Raúl Alfonsín. Just before mid-day, those who wished to pay their respects to Alfonsín lined up to pass by his grave and leave flowers or to say a prayer. Alfonsín was the president that restored democracy to Argentina following the military dictatorship that ruled from 1976 to 1983. Other events were held throughout the country.

    Judge Ariel Lijo announced that an investigation of former president Carlos Menem and former judge Juan José Galeano’s involvement in the 1994 terrorist attack on the AMIA Argentine Jewish centre would go to trial yesterday. Former Intelligence Secretary Hugo Anzorreguy, former deputy head of the SIDE state intelligency agency Juan Carlos Anchezar, former Metropolitan Police chief Jorge Palacios, and former Federal Police officer Carlos Castañeda will also stand trial.

    CFK, Macri clash over BA subways

    Buenos Aires City Mayor Mauricio Macri gave a press conference yesterday afternoon following President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s proposals only hours before regarding the transfer of the subway system to the City government. Macri reiterated that “the federal government is the conceding authority of the subway system, which will only be modified once an agreement has been approved by the Legislature ... until that happens, there will not be a transfer of responsibilities.”
