Secretary Clinton promotes cooperation with Brazil during Rousseff’s visit
Calling Brazil an "inspiring success story" secretary of State Hillary Clinton said today that relations with Brazil must continue to mature so that the two democratic powers can promote economic and political stability around the world.
"I'm confident that this relationship will serve to stabilize our hemisphere, our economies, but even reach far beyond. Because what we want to see is the progress in Brazil that has been so laudable over the last several decades continue to grow from strength to strength," Clinton said, during the opening of the US Chamber of Commerce to welcome Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff on her first official visit to the US.
Clinton also announced US plans to open two additional consulates in Brazil. She is expected to sign an aviation agreement with Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota later today.
Patriota, speaking after Clinton, also praised the improving relations between the two countries, while noting that the world is becoming increasingly multipolar.
"Perhaps Brazil's unique comparative advantage in this emerging world order is that we would like to be a constructive, peaceful link between and among the different poles," he said.
"There is tremendous untapped potential in both of our countries. We have only begun to explore how we can work and prosper together," Clinton concluded.
