Boxer Jorge 'La Hiena' Barrios sentenced to four years in prison

Boxer Jorge “La Hiena” Barrios was sentenced to four years in prison, as the three judges found him guilty of causing a car accident in which a pregnant woman died in January 2010

Barrios was driving his BMW SUV when he reared ended a Fiat 147 car, which ran over Yamila González, who was six months pregnant at the time.

Barrios will be taken into custody immediately to begin his sentence. He was also banned from driving cars for eight years.

The judges dismissed the notion that Barrios was responsible of manslaughter, which would have meant a harsher sentence, and clarified that they could not prove whether the boxer was under the influence of drugs or alcohol while driving.

The lawyer for Yamila González’s family had requested a 12 year prison sentence, while prosecutor Oscar Deniro requested a 3 and a half year prison sentence on charges of manslaughter.

On January 24th, 2010, in the intersection of Independencia and Ayacuchos streets in Mar del Plata, Barrios’BMW SUV rear-ended a Fiat 147 which had stopped before a red light and ran over a group of pedestrians including a six month pregnant González.

Barrios fled the scene immediately and allegedly crashed another vehicle. Five hours after the accident he surrendered in a nearby police station
