UK insists it will 'steadfastly defend' the Malvinas Islands

Foreign Secretary William Hague formally announced before ambassadors the opening of UK’s diplomatic headquarter at El Salvador to strengthen the relations with Latin America and warned once more that his country will “steadfastly” defend the Malvinas Islands.

During a dinner before hundreds of ambassadors, Hague assured that the aim is to “avoid an increase in the diplomatic tension,” although he insisted in his government’s “commitment” with the “kelpers’ self-determination.”

“We are reversing Britain’s decline in Latin America, where we are opening a new Embassy in El Salvador. This determination to deepen our relations with Latin America is coupled with our steadfast commitment to the right of self determination of the people of the Malvinas Islands,” as the UK newspaper The Telegraph stated Hague’s words.

As the 30th anniversary of the Malvinas Islands war approaches, the British official spoke about it and assured that “more than a celebration it is a commemoration.”

“I think Argentina will also be holding commemorations of those who died in the conflict. Since both countries will be doing that I don't think there is anything provocative about that,” he added.

The head of the Foreign Office insisted that Prince William’s trip to the Islands and the decision to send the HMS Dauntless were “entirely routine military movements.”
