Police arrest two after high-speed chase, shootout in San Telmo
Two suspects were arrested in San Telmo after a high-speed chase and a shootout that started in the city of Avellaneda and ended at the heart of the traditional downtown neighbourhood, police sources indicated.
The incident began on Mitre Avenue, close to the Villa Tranquila area, in Avellaneda, where police officials stopped three men in a Citroën C3, who they say “looked conspicuous.”
Police sources added that when the men became aware of their presence, they began shooting at them while they drove away towards the City.
A high-speed chase ensued over Puente Pueyrredon and the 9 de Julio Sur highway.
After entering the City, the suspects began shooting again at the patrol car that was chasing them. As they reached the intersection of Paseo Colón Av. and Carlos Calvo, in San Telmo, they collided with another vehicle, which forced them to stop.
According to sources, the suspects abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot, but two of them were arrested by police officials who were helped by members of the Federal Police.
The third one remains at large, police sources said.
The police seized two guns, a 9mm and a 3.80 caliber.
Officials are currently investigating whether the car used by the suspects was stolen since initial reports show the license plates do not belong to the vehicle.
