Carjacker killed by police after high-speed chase

A carjacker was killed and another was arrested after stealing a car in the San Miguel area and being chased down by the police to the Los Polvorines neighbourhood, police sources said.

The two armed men jumped a woman who was driving her vehicle at the intersection of Presidente Perón and Rivadavia, in the Greater Buenos Aires area of San Miguel.

Sources indicated that the two men seized her car and used it to escape. The woman immediately called 911 and warned the authorities about the carjacking, for which they began a lockdown procedure in the neighbourhood.

A few blocks away from the area, police officials identified the vehicle and began chasing the thieves, who were driving down Gran Bourg Av., in the Malvinas Argentinas area.

According to sources, when the perpetrators reached Los Polvorines they realized they were being surrounded by the police, for which they abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot, resulting in an intense shootout between them and the police.

One of the perpetrators was shot dead during the chase while the other was arrested, sources indicated.

The suspect currently under arrest is over 18 years old and has a criminal record, the police said.
