'Argentina has a strong democracy,' lawmakers
Before entering Congress to take part in the joint special session to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the military coup, lawmakers highlighted the fact that Argentina has a strong democracy.
Victory Front senator Aníbal Fernández deemed that the calling in pulling off the March 24th, 1976 coup was civil. “The military who participated must be judged to recover the dignity of the San Martin army. Discussions must take place within politics, but we must not forget this day because all of us have suffered from it equally and some with more affronts than others,” he added.
The former Cabinet Chief stressed the task of current Radical Party lawmaker Ricardo Gil Laverdra, who was a member of the court who tried the military junta. “It is important to highlight that there were people like deputy Gil Lavedra who was part of the court who tried the military and we must acknowledge that,” he said.
Victory Front bloc leader Agustín Rossi also emphasized the Government’s task to defend human rights in the last few years. “We are here to honour and to remember those who gave their lives in the fight to recover democracy and with the joy of knowing that Argentina has a sorong democracy,” he concluded
