Catholic Church says SC ruling on abortion 'bypasses Congress'

The head of the Catholic Campus Ministry in Buenos Aires, Guillermo Marcó, continued to criticize the Supreme Court over its recent ruling in favour of legalizing abortions in case of rape and assured that the measure “legalizes abortion by bypassing Congress.”

“Nowadays there’s no doubt life begins at conception. That child is an autonomous being that needs for a mother’s care to grow. There wouldn’t be a difference between killing a person and performing an abortion,” the Church representative said. 

Marcó assured that when a rape victim has an abortion, “she doesn’t punish the rapist but the person being conceived, who has nothing to do with the criminal act. They are just looking to find a way to decriminalize abortion.”

He also explained that after the ruling, “now any woman will be going to a public hospital and say she was raped. Since now there’s no way to prove whether she’s telling the truth or not, the doctor will have no choice but to perform the abortion and end an innocent life.” 

Last March 13th, the Argentina Supreme Court unanimously decided that it was illegal to sanction rape victims who chose to have an abortion. The Court also ruled that they will no longer need a court permit in order to do so.

The Catholic Church has strongly criticized the decision, arguing that it only brings society closer to decriminalizing abortion.
