F1 could return to Argentina in 2013

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced that negotiations are underway with Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone to bring back a Grand Prix to Argentina, as she received 2012 rally Dakar pilots in a ceremony at the Government House.

The President explained that the aim to sign a three year contract starting in 2013 and that the race would be held in Mar del Plata either in late November or late December.

The return of the Formula One races back to Argentina had been analyzed several times but due to the fact that both BA City and BA province ban tobacco advertising, the costs would have been too high.

With the Government’s backing, the project is feasible. The City’s racetrack is not fit to host such a career and thus Mar del Plata was chosen.

Due to the chosen date, the Argentine grand prix will be held either before or after Brazil’s and thus the season could end with champion being awarded in Mar del Plata.
