Timerman, Patriota warn about presence of nuclear weapons in Latin America
Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman met in Sao Paulo with his Brazilian counterpart, Antonio Patriota, and they both stressed on the need to keep strengthening the bilateral relationship. They also expressed “concern” about the possible presence of nuclear weapons in the South Atlantic area.
After their meeting, both ministers stressed on the importance to redefine the Mechanism of Cooperation and Coordination, with a meeting every three months to discuss science, technology and projects to develop in the nuclear and space areas.
They later remarked that South America is a region that is “free of nuclear weapons,” the Foreign Ministry said.
Timerman warned about the United Kingdom’s increasing militarization of the South Atlantic region and repeated that the UK government has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of nuclear weapons in the area.
The Ministry stated that bringing nuclear weapons in the region would be in direct contradiction with the Tlatelolco Treaty, which looks to keep Latin America free of nuclear weapons.
Both ministers shared their concerns over the possible presence of nuclear weapons in the area.
Patriota also repeated that Brazil will continue to support Argentina in its sovereignty claim over the Malvinas Islands.
