Strong quake hits New Caledonia, no tsunami alert

A magnitude 6.9 struck New Caledonia in the southern Pacific on Saturday, the United State Geological Survey said.

No survey warning was issued, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The quake was centred 158 miles off Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia with a depth of 19.3 miles.
