UK: 'Decisions regarding flights to Malvinas must be considered by the islands' administration'
The UK Foreign Office came on stage today to respond to President Cristina de Kirchner who yesterday said she wanted Argentina's flag carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas to fly to the Malvinas Islands and to renegotiate a 1999 agreement with Britain that allows flights from Chile.
"Any discussion about flights to the Falklands Islands (Malvinas) must be first considered by the government of the Falklands (Malvinas),' a Foreign Office spokesperson stated today.
The communiqué added "it's not completely clear what they are proposing" and that the UK expected Argentina to comply with the deal signed by both administrations in 1999 by which Chilean airline LAN would offer a weekly flight between Argentina and the islands.
"It would be highly disappointing" if Argentina pushed for that route to be cancelled.
