Argentina beat Great Britain 1-0, win Champions Trophy
In a strong performance by the Leonas, World Champions Argentina managed to defeat Great Britain 1-0 in the Champions Trophy final in Rosario.
Argentina’s only goal came during the first half of the match after Silvina D’Elia’s penalty corner strike got through.
Great Britain had to settle for the silver. The bronze went to the Netherlands after they beat Germany 5-4.
Yesterday, “Las Leonas” squeezed through 2-0 on penalties after finishing level 2-2 in their Saturday’s semifinal against the Netherlands; while the British squad beat Germany 2-0 in the other semifinal.
It is the first time that a British side has reached the final of the Champions Trophy.
Argentina had Noel Barrionuevo to thank for keeping them alive against the Dutch as she scored to equalise at 2-2 with just 86 seconds left in regulation time.
The World Champions then stole through to the final on penalties 2-0 with conversions from Rocío Sánchez Moore and Luciana Aymar, knocking out the reigning Olympic and Champions Trophy champions in the process.
It is the sixth year in a row that Argentina have reached the final of the Champions Trophy.
"Both teams played very well. I think today's match was won by the intelligence. Both teams had moments where they controlled the match," Aymar said afterwards.
