Chávez reiterates support on Argentina's sovereignty claim over Malvinas

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner held a phone conversation with her Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chávez, who reiterated his support of Argentina’s claim over the sovereignty of the Malvinas islands, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry announced.

According to a communiqué both Heads of State “agreed in rejecting the military escalation being promoted in the area and in backing the multiple statements of the United Nation’s General Assembly that state that the UK has the obligation of ending the colonial situation in Malvinas islands.”

Chávez and Fernández de Kirchner also talked about the bilateral relation and agreed to make further efforts to increase trade and economic exchange between both countries.

“Additionally, Chávez also congratulated Fernández de Kirchner on the improvement of her health and energy, following her thyroid gland surgery and subsequent three week leave of absence,” the communiqué concluded.
