Timerman praises US stance on Malvinas
Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman praised the US stance on the conflict between Argentina and UK over the Malvinas islands sovereignty, after it called for both countries to solve the dispute via bilateral dialogue.
“Obama’s administration has urged Argentina and the UK to talk, to find a peaceful solution and has said it does not recognize the United Kingdom’s sovereignty over the islands,” Timerman said while in Managua, Nicaragua.
“This news will be very well received all along Latin American countries, because it s an acknowledgement not only to Argentina’s plight, but a plight of all free Latin American countries,” Timerman added.
The United States said on Friday said it recognizes de facto UK administration of the islands but takes no position regarding sovereignty, while Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo insisted that the Malvinas sovereignty claim is inherent to the Fernández de Kirchner administration will keep urging the UK to negotiate.
Tension between Argentina and UK over the Malvinas islands sovereignty has escalated in the last few weeks as the 30th anniversary of the war approaches. British Prime Minister David Cameron accused Argentina of colonialism regarding the islands, stating the country does not respect the kelpers’s self-determination and decision to be British citizens.
