River draw 1-1 against Central

River Plate’s Alexis Ferrero struggles for the ball with Rosario Central’s Gonzalo Castillejos.
Fernando Cavenaghi equalized for River Plate at the Monumental stadium to draw 1-1 with Rosario Central in the National B Division Tournament. Belgrano defeated Racing Club 3-2 in Avellaneda with two goals scored by striker César Pereyra.

River Plate drew 1-1 with Rosario Central yesterday at the Monumental stadium in a match for the 16th round of the National B Division Tournament.

The visitors went ahead with a goal netted by Gonzalo Castillejos in the 48th minute, while Matías Almeyda’s team equalized in the 77th after a great finishing by tournament top scorer Fernando Cavenaghi.

River had a clear chance to win the game in the fourth minute of extra time, when Andrés Ríos’ shot hit the right post of goalkeeper Jorge Broun.

The hosts climbed to the top of the standings again with 30 points. They share the lead with Instituto of Córdoba, who will play tomorrow against Independiente Rivadavia of Mendoza.

Also yesterday, Racing Club lost 3-2 at home against Belgrano in a match for the 16th round of the Apertura Tournament.

Striker César Pereyra put the visitors ahead in the 31st and Gastón Turús doubled the difference in the 35th at the Juan Domingo Perón stadium in Avellaneda.

Colombian playmaker Giovanni Moreno discounted with a free-kick two minutes later, but Pereyra netted again with a header a few seconds before the end of the first half. Valentín Viola netted Racing’s second goal in the 68th.

Earlier, San Lorenzo, with the debut of Leonardo Madelón as their new coach, drew 0-0 against Newell’s Old Boys at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium in Rosario.

San Lorenzo have 16 points and are still in the promotion-relegation playoff zone and Tigre, their next opponent, are six points behind in the average standings.

At the Islas Malvinas stadium in Floresta, All Boys and Lanús also drew 0-0 in a boring match without many chances to score.

Late yesterday, Olimpo faced San Martín of San Juan.

Today, Boca Juniors will try to get a little closer to the Apertura title when they visit Godoy Cruz in Mendoza at 7.10pm. Other today’s matches: Arsenal v Estudiantes (5pm); Vélez v Colón (5pm) and Banfield v Argentinos (7.10pm)

Julio César Falcioni’s side know that even winning they will not lift the trophy after Tigre’s 3-0 victory over Atlético Rafaela on Friday. However, they can claim the title next week if they beat Banfield at La Bombonera stadium.

Boca will make only one change for today: Darío Cvitanich will replace injured Nicolás Blandi.

Godoy Cruz, looking for a spot in the Libertadores Cup 2012, will change their tactic and coach Jorge Da Silva will use a 4-4-2 instead of his classic 3-5-2.

Leaders Boca are still unbeaten in the competition and have 33, while Godoy Cruz are 11th with 20.
