Demolition of San Nicolás flats expected today

A close-up of what remains of the building that part-collapsed last night in the BA city neighbourhood of Monserrat.

The city government evaluated today the possibility of demolishing the remains of the building along Bartolomé Mitre at 1200, in the neighbourhood of Monserrat, which part-collapsed last night. Meanwhile, residents of the building and neighbours pleaded that the local government find a solution to save them from losing their homes.

A team of Federal Police fire fighters were analyzing the state of the remains of the cracked building, with the help of using a crane which enabled them to analyse the damage from above.

Earlier, the City Cabinet Chief, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, admitted that “at first glance, one would assume that it needs to be demolished,” however, adding that “we must also look at the risk factor on the adjoining buildings, should a demolition be necessary.”

Rodríguez Larreta also stated that “right now the priority is to carry out a risk assessment and to look after the people,” insisting that “we need to determine the cause of the collapse and see which steps we should follow.”

The neighbours in the area however, remained unsure and unhappy about the circumstances they were being subjected to. “Nobody has informed us of anything, and we don’t even know what is going to happen,” stated a neighbor to the press.

“The situation is a disaster, I’ve lost everything. My papers, documents, money, my house, and that’s all I have,” said Verónica, a lawyer and property owner in the building that collapsed.

“We’ve been left out in the cold all of a sudden, with nowhere to go and no money,” said the lawyer, then furthering that “I’m trying to figure out what I am going to do now, and I hope a solution arises as soon as possible.”
