UK congratulates CFK, but warns ‘Malvinas non negotiable’
The United Kingdom government congratulated reelected president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner for her victory at the polls yesterday, but remarked the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands is not “negotiable,”according to an international news agency.
“We congratulate Cristina Kirchner for her reelection and we look forward to work together in a variety of fronts that globally affect us such us the fight against nuclear arms proliferation, climate change, human rights and economic development,” a spokesman for the British foreign ministry said.
Upon being asked about a possible shift in the UK´s Malvinas policies the spokesman reiterated the British position. “We value our relationship to Argentina, but we don’t want that to dominate our bilateral talks.”
“Our position remains the same; there will be no talks over sovereignty unless the islanders want to do so. Our position is still for self determination rights,” he stressed.
