Train crash in Flores leaves 11 dead
At 6.15am, a fatal level crossing accident occurred in Flores neighbourhood on Tuesday morning on the Sarmiento train line that connects with Artigas street, where a 92 line bus crashed into a passenger train. The wreckage of the bus were removed by 9 pm.
The impact of the crash caused the train to derail, consequently crashing into another oncoming train. Eleven people were confirmed dead, and 228 injured. Victims of the crash were admitted to several local hospitals.
SAME ambulance and rescue teams worked at the scene dealing with casualty victims, where earlier, two people were trapped under the wreckage. The critical cases were transported directly to local hospitals to be treated.
SAME head, Alberto Crescenti, stated that those trapped under one of the trains had been rescued, who were reported to be one of the train drivers and a passenger. At the same time, Crescenti confirmed that there were twenty victims left critically injured as a result of the crash.
Police officials announced that the nine people who lost their lives in the crash and the other two that died in the hospital, had not yet been identified. Hospitals released names of victims being treated in their facilities, in order to inform relatives of their whereabouts.
Unconfirmed witness reports said a 92-line bus crossed the level crossing before with a lowered barrier, crashing into a moving train causing it to derail, colliding with another train coming from the opposite direction. One of the trains involved in the incident derailed almost entirely, while the bus remained crumpled after the impact of the crash. However, the cause of the crash was not yet confirmed officially.
A spokesperson for the Federal Police told the press that “more than fifty ambulances and ten teams of firemen” worked at the scene alongside police.
Victims of the accident were admitted to Hospital General de Agudos Dr. Teodoro Álvarez, Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero, Hospital General de Agudos Donación F. Santojanni, and Hospital General de Agudos Carlos G. Durand to be treated. Álvarez Hospital was reported to have been treating 30 victims of the crash.
