Violent land evacuation of 200 families in Tucumán

Tucumán police conducted a mass land eviction on Friday, concerning more than 200 families who were squatting on a site in the suburbs of the Tucumán capital. In resistance of the evacuation, squatters threw rocks, sticks, and used machetes against the officials on the fringe of the site.

With regard to the length of time the occupants have been living on the land, according to an unofficial report, the squatters arrived to the site at the beginning of June.

The land is located between Salvador, Nicaragua, Diagonal Chaco and Rafael Obligado streets in the north of San Miguel de Tucumán.

This morning, by order of Judge Nora Wrexler, more than 150 police officers circulated the area, and after 1 pm this afternoon began the evacuation.

It was informed that there were no injuries, nor arrests; however official data has not been published.

Tucumán Governor José Alperovich commented on the issue of illegal squatting and land occupation mentioning, “There is a need to defend private property. I ask that people not overtake pieces of land that do not belong to them.”
