'Bambucicleta,' the bicycle made from bamboo canes
A young man from Rosario unveiled the final product of a project that had been the works for some time. The so-called “Bambucicleta” (bamboo bicycle) are handmade bikes, made from bamboo canes, a very flexible yet resistant tool. The environmentally-friendly bikes are now being sold to select clients in the United States and Europe.
The invention of a bamboo bicycle is not brand new. However, the designer of the Argentine take on the “greener” mode of transport, Nicolás Masuelli presents his own design.
Masuelli, aged 29, is a 4th year student of Industrial Engineering at the National University of Rosario (UNR), passionate about aeronautics and ecology.
The idea to create a new design came about 6 years ago. Masuelli currently makes the bikes by hand in a factory located in the locality of Alvear.
“The ‘bambucicleta’ project emerged after I made a conventional bicylce for bike-tourism. I was studying bamboo as a construction material and its relation with the environment,” he continued.
Masuelli assured that after his investigation he read about a Slovakian engineer who “had designed a bamboo mountain bike.”
This man turned out to be his inspiration that led to the first prototype finished in 2007.
At least ten bicycles per month are been produced at the Alvear factory, but “due to the increasing demand, we are changing some techniques to systematize the process,” he added.
