Timerman calls for Mercosur's support over Malvinas dispute
Argentina called for the support of the Mercosur over what was described as "a new aggression" coming from Great Britain, with respect to the historic conflict between the two countries over the sovereignty of the Malvinas islands.
Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman questioned recent statements made by British Defense Minister Liam Fox, who in recent days, assured that the United Kingdom maintained their firm stance over the sovereignty of the islands, 30 years after the war between the two countries.
“Argentina never failed to show its willingness to negotiate, to reach a peaceful solution. Unfortunately it has been confronted with an unjustified and systematic response from the Unite Kingdom,” Timerman said before the members of the 41st Summit for Presidents of the Mercosur, which takes place in Asunción, Paraguay.
The Argentine Foreign Minister also accused the United Kingdom of holding “sole responsibility over the perpetuation of this anachronistic colonial situation,” which had also been questioned previously by Ecuador’s President, Rafael Correa, who was also present at the summit.
