'Whoever vows to eradicate insecurity is lying,' CFK says

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner assured that “it is necessary to understand that when it comes to security and infrastructure, coordination between the City, the province and the entire country is fundamental and unavoidable.”

“Whoever vows to definitely eradicate insecurity is lying. Some things cannot be guaranteed with words or laws, but with attitudes, politics and behaviour,” she said before government officials.

“We hope this new plan is up to the challenge, but we will never be able to fully eradicate insecurity since there are always new incidents taking place,” she explained. 

The President then assured that regaining confidence in the security forces is “fundamental, because people need to trust the police.”

“It is important that no one pretends to make use of their government as a political platform,” she stressed during a ceremony in which she unveiled new elements destined to improve the current prison system. 

Fernández de Kirchner said that “we’re currently going through a modernization process of the prison system,” and added that it has already been put out to tender, “so the last prison located within the City can be finally moved away from Villa Devoto.”

“We are still fighting crime with resources that are 100 years old and criminals are way ahead of us. That’s why it’s important that we move forward with this,” she explained. 

“This is the beginning of a new unification process, in which it’s imperative that we articulate security forces so we can come up with solutions,” she said, assuring that “bank holdups have decreased on an 80 percent."

The President made these statements as she announced a new security plan named “Cinturón Sur” (Southern Belt), which looks to coordinate efforts against insecurity between the Federal Police, the Border Patrol and the Prefecture.
