'The gov't has nothing to do with Grondona,' Cabinet Chief

Cabinet Chief Aníbal Fernández said that the government “has nothing to do” with the continuation or not of Julio Humberto Grondona as head of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), and noted that the only relation between the Executive power and the AFA is “an agreement signed”, thus referring to the "Fútbol Para Todos" broadcasting programme.

Asked if the government has withdrew its support to Grondona, mostly after the latest bribery accusations made by ex referee Javier Ruíz, who stated that referred take bribes to arrange matches results and that the AFA’s strongman is all aware of the situation, the minister said “We are not part of such discussions. The government only has an agreement signed with the AFA and we respect it as such.”

Likewise, football star Diego Armando Maradona has recently asked the government to “release Grondona’s hand and stop supporting him”, to which the minister said “Please, let’s not mix the government with something we have nothing to do with.”
