Asad leaves Ecuador's Emelec to coach San Lorenzo

Coach Omar Asad.

Argentine Coach Omar Asad is quitting Emelec of Ecuador to take charge of San Lorenzo, the Argentine side's president Carlos Abdo said.

Asad, who steered modest Argentine team Godoy Cruz into a South American Libertadores Cup berth for the first time in December, takes over from Ramon Díaz who resigned last month.

"We began negotiations on Sunday and closed the deal at midday," Abdo told a news conference, adding that 40-year-old Asad would take charge on May 25 after making use of a release clause in his contract with Emelec.

Caretaker coach Miguel Angel Tojo will resume work with the Saints' junior teams.

San Lorenzo, one of Argentina's 'Big Five' clubs, are sixth in the Clausura championship eight points behind leaders Vélez Sársfield.

A former striker, Asad helped Vélez Sársfield win the Libertadores Cup and Intercontinental Cup in 1994.
