Fire, bomb scare disrupt Miami airport

Police evacuated part of Miami International Airport to check out a report of a suspicious package, just hours after firefighters extinguished a fuel tank fire that disrupted operations overnight.

Planes could be seen landing and taking off early today, although one concourse was evacuated and sealed off so that police could investigate the suspicious package report.

Firefighters were still investigating the blaze that broke out about 11 p.m. local time Wednesday evening at a fuel tank farm on the airport perimeter.

"The fire was extinguished by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue at 1:20 a.m.," fire spokeswoman Cristina Armand said.

The fire was not near the runways or the terminal but the fire reduced the available fuel supply and at least three dozen flights had been delayed or canceled.

The Miami airport is a major hub for AMR Corp's American Airlines.
