Gualeguaychú Assembly to march against UPM mill

Previous protests against the UPM (ex Botnia) pulp mill
The Civic Assembly of Gualeguaychú, who oppose the operation of the UPM (ex Botnia) pulp mill, have announced a new protest march for May 8th, “against the mill and in defence of the environment.”

The march is to move toward the international bridge between Fray Bentos and Puerto Unzué in Uruguay when it goes ahead in May.

In a document issued today, the organisation mentioned that, “the Uruguay River ecosystem is still contaminated and the reasons which motivated the International Justice Court of La Haya persist", where the State announced illegal pollution by Botnia (now UPM).

The assembly also indicated that it is dependent on the completion of the resolute due to the mistake by the Court of La Haya over the monitoring of the Uruguay river.

They also maintained that this way they will “allow the affects on the community to do with the alterations made on the river day-to-day, which produces toxins in the water, to be seen and highlighted”.
