Independiente lose but still advance to group stage
Ecuadorean Deportivo Quito defeated Independiente 1-0 during the second leg of the South American Copa Libertadores preliminary round. Nevertheless, the Argentine team achieved to classify for the group stage because of their last week's home victory (2-0).
Deportivo Quito's Michael Quiñones netted the only goal of the game at 11' of the second half.
Seven time winners of the South American Copa Libertadores, Independiente, had won 2-0 the first leg of the round held in Southern Greater BA city of Avellaneda.
Known by its fans as “The national pride,” Independiente achieved a major victory in the heights of Quito (2,850 masl), an always tough scenario for visitor teams.
The “Diablos’” coach, Antonio Mohamed, has set the Copa Libertadores as the main goal for the club this year. Anyway, the last Copa Sudamericana winners will also have to face some other international competitions such as the Recopa Sudamericana against Brazil’s Internacional de Porto Alegre (winner of last Copa Libertadores), the Suruga Bank Cup against Japan's League winners: Jubilo Iwata FC, and the 2011 edition of the Copa Sudamericana on the second semester.
