'Bilateral relations cannot be based on Obama's visits,' Timerman
Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman sustains that “the relationship with the United States is a fluid one where similarities exist, however there are also great differences.” He went on to say that “the analysis of bilateral relations cannot be based on whether Obama visits or not,” and emphasised that Washington “maintains interests over friendships.”
Through social network Twitter, Timerman expressed that “in many contexts the relationship with the US is very dynamic, for example with nuclear security, the G20, terrorism and sciences.” He then said, “there are others which show limits which we should not, and do not want to cross.”
He continued to say that “it has been made clear that in recent meetings with government officials from the US, whether in Buenos Aires or in Washington, that Argentina will neither purchase arms, nor begin an arms race in the region. Neither will we sign any security pacts with countries outside our region.”
To conclude he mentioned that “the free trade bilateral treaties are negative for our economies and we reject political manipulation and commercial traps, hidden by unsolved phyto-sanitary barriers, which take years to solve.” Timerman expressed these final comments with regards to the policies implemented by the US for the region.
