One dead, 17 injured in accident in Pan-American highway

A youngster died, and at least 17 people injured, two of which serious, when a lorry crashed into five cars on the Pan-American highway at the junction of Campana in the Buenos Aires Province.

The accident occurred at around 3AM at kilometre 71 on the motorway and affected a family who was going on holiday.

The lorry had an extra carrier filled with cement attached to it, hardening the impact when it ran into each car one by one. One of the cars, containing a family from La Boca, had stopped briefly on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

Eye-witnesses at the scene stated that the youngster, 20 years old, was thrown fourty metres from the car he was in, and died from the impact.

Many people were hurt, but two elderly people were found with serious injuries.

After the impact, the lorry flipped over and a person was stick inside until firemen got to the scene to set them free.
