Timerman claims Uruguay to report ‘modifications’ on pulp mill in Colonia

Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and his Uruguayan counterpart, Luis Almagro.

Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and his Uruguayan counterpart, Luis Almagro, confirmed that the construction of a pulp mill in Colonia de Sacramento, on the banks of the River Plate facing Argentina, will be based in the framework of the bilateral treaty.

Timerman said that the government had shown its support for the project in 2009 and that the “modifications” of the factory will now be formally reported by President José “Pepe” Mujica’s administration.

The minister assured that his counterpart Almagro will send him a “letter” stating the technical modifications of the initial project of the pulp mill and that, once this step is taken; the construction will be based in the framework of the Río de la Plata treaty.

Timerman affirmed that there are “many differences” between the construction of the UPM pulp mill (ex Botnia) and the project of Montes del Plata Company.
