National government 'is responsible for city's safety,' Mayor Macri says
These comments were made in response to the recent land occupations and conflicts in the Villa Lugano neighbourhood, and following the various transport cuts which have paralyzed city traffic flow in recent days.
“There is a certain abandonment in the role of defending the rights of the public here,” he mentioned, continuing, “it is something that the state must impose”.
He went on to say that national security is “dependent on Federal Police, whom which are controlled by the National Government, not that of the City”.
These comments were made during a radio interview, in which he continued, “it is clear that here there is a conspiracy, a plot to drive us crazy. Laws are being broken, and the Federal Police are protecting those who break the law”.
Macri believes that the Metropolitan Police does not have the capability or the capacity to act on the incidents yet, essentially passing the responsibility to Federal Police.
He stated, “when the conflicts in Soldati arose, I phoned the Chief of the Federal Police, and he exclaimed that they did not have the capability to unite with the Metropolitan Police to be able to deal with the incidents”.
