Additional bonus demands 'would make situation spin out of control,' Méndez

UIA head Héctor Méndez.

Only minutes before meeting with CGT labour union confederation leader Hugo Moyano, the head of the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) Héctor Méndez said he was willing to restart dialogue in order to restore peace between both sectors, although he warned that if workers demand for more than a 30 percent salary increase as a precondition to meet, the situation will “spin out of control.”

Mr. Méndez, scheduled to meet after 11 am with Mr. Moyano, warned that he would not attend if he was faced with any sort of preconditions in order to reestablish relations.

There is speculation that the CGT leader might tone down his demands if the business sector caves in to some of his needs, including a $1000 pesos additional bonus for the union members before New Year’s.

“Some demands seem fair to us and we’re willing to listen to them, but some others are just not going to happen,” he explained. “If we’re against one of those demands, we will just fight it.”

The meeting was scheduled to take place after 11 am at the CGT headquarters.
