Government authorizes rise in fuel prices

The government has authorized a rise in fuel prices, a decision which before had been put on hold, due to an official regulation put into place months ago.

Last August, the government had ordered petrol companies to take a step back from increasing fuel prices, which had previously been applied, and implemented an old norm to regulate the price and flow of fuel costs.

The new raise in prices, effectively erases the ruling, and will come into effect as of Wednesday.

According to the new settlement, "currently the commercial conditions are very different to what they were".

Repsol-YPF, Exxon, Shell and Petrobras are the market´s main competitors affected by the changes.

Previously, following the economic crisis of 2001-2002, the government had frozen fuel prices for a number of years by way of unwritten law with local petrol companies.
