J.J López becomes River Plate coach

Juan José López, who had been acting as interim coach of River Plate since the dismissal of Angel Cappa, was last night confirmed as coach for next years’ Clausura Championship.

“I‘ve just talked with Daniel (club president Passarella) and he told me I would continue as coach,” López said on the radio.

In the last six matches of the Apertura Championship in which López was in charge, the team gained 13 points out of 18 which was enough to move them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. River Plate also finished in fourth place in the Apertura -the highest place of any of the so-called big clubs.

López was a midfielder for River Plate and later coached several clubs -Instituto de Córdoba, Rosario Central, Bahia Blanca’s Olimpo, Unión de Santa Fe, and Talleres de Córdoba- before returning to River Plate as junior teams coordinator until he took over as interim first team coach.

Talking of the coming tournament, López said: “Our fight will be to pick up as many points as possible to keep away from the relegation zone. I propose to work jointly with the juniors of which we have so many promising ones. We are closely tied with the junior teams and I will talk with Daniel to see who will take over as junior team coordinator, but it is expected to be a former club player again.
