Argentina finish fourth in World League semi-finals but still secure double qualification

By Eric Weil / For The Herald
Argentina’s women’s national hockey team only finished fourth in the World League semi-finals in Johannesburg, losing 2-1 to Germany in the semi-final and 5-2 to England (Luciana Van Der Heyde and Delfina Merino scored) in the third-place play-off. But the team still managed to secure qualification for the World League finals and the 2018 World Cup.

So what happens now? Coach Agustin Corradi finished fourth in his first international tournament in charge (which was won by the United States on penalties). He unexpectedly replaced Gabriel Minadeo who was already making plans for this season’s campaign. His Olympic team was knocked out by Argentina’s eternal foes, the Netherlands, in the quarter-finals — just one round earlier which does not make such a lot of difference. Of course, leading scorer and captain Carla Rebecchi retired after the Olympics, but players have retired from other teams all over the world.

Four games were left pending in the last round of the Women’s Metropolitan Championship, but only one of the games could actually alter the top-10 title play-off, with SIC qualifying if they do not lose to Belgrano on August 5.

The title play-offs begin on August 12 when the remaining six top division teams face the top six of the lower division in a type of reclassification mini-tournament, from which the top six go into next season’s top division and the rest drop to the B Division. The season ends with the top four play-offs for the title, which this scribe has always deemed unnecessary as the team finishing top should directly be champions.
