Pakistani ambassador honoured at farewell event

By Michael Soltys / Herald Staff
Departing Pakistani Ambassador Imtiaz Ahmad was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Orden de Mayo at a farewell reception in the Foreign Ministry last Monday, thus ending a mission of over three years (just long enough to fit in four Vendimia Festivals in Mendoza to his “absolute delight”). In his valedictory Ahmad could point to general success in deepening channels of co-operation and consultation — especially in education, investment promotion and science and technology — but he took special pride in having seen the bilateral trade volume more than double from about 200 million dollars in 2013 to 450 million today with greater diversification. This should take off once a Preferential Trade Agreement between the world’s newest emerging market and Mercosur is concluded. While Argentina is forever seeking investment from abroad, Ahmad could even point to capital flow in the opposite direction — Argentine investments in the Pakistani pharmaceutical and telecommunications sectors. The departing envoy concluded his speech with references to polo, tango and, above all, the warm human relations.
